Smart Device for Children
With the advance in technology, there are tons of new devices being introduced each year and it is all exciting to try those products which may help our everyday life, or just make it more convenient such as smart thermostat or smart LED bulbs. Smartphones and other devices like tablets or laptops are our companions both at home and at work but as adults, we have responsibility in which these tools are required. For children, the reason is heavier towards entertainment.
Children are very active, they are curious about a lot of things and can be quick to get bored. In the past we played with doll houses, car toys, building blocks, etc. but today, our kids are more interested in smart devices as well. This often brings concern among parents because technology addiction is a thing and it may affect your children’s learning time as well especially when their body and brain are in a very important development stage.
In recent years with the surge of smart devices and how many parents let their children have their own piece of technology, it does affect the children themselves. Dr. Michael Levine, the executive director of the Joan Ganz Cooney Center stated that half of US 10-year olds read poorly but, it is not the whole story. He was conducting interesting studies in which one is using a tablet as a media to let kids learn to read through an app and this improves the average skill by 27%.
Another study still uses tablets but with different educational apps and the result shows a similar improvement but at a different level as now it is lower at 17% only. As for the one that compares traditional book learning to e-readers, the result shows that traditional books make learning more effective as it gives a better focusing effect on literacy for younger children while on the other hand e-readers does help the older children to maintain their enthusiasm and learning with books.
The overall conclusion is still confusing at this point because it seems that they can have both advantages and disadvantages so rather than the technology itself, we agree that engagement is what makes the learning effective. The story and how a learning process is done are important for children to have better engagement so rather than taking all the smart devices, it is probably better to provide them with something similarly interesting but focusing more on the educative part without making them bored.

About InnoTab and LeapPad
This idea bring so many possibilities about what we can use the smart device for yet, as a tool made for productivity, while you can find tons of great learning app for different grade and ages, our smartphone and tablets are built for a great amount of activities and these can be very tempting as well as distracting for our children. But, worry not because today we do have lots of options to give our children both toys and learning tools.
These types of toys and devices are fairly new because we don’t see them yet around a decade ago but nowadays there are so many learning tablets you can find for a very affordable price to prevent your kids spending much of their time using a real smart device which may affect their learning time. Among those options available, InnoTab and LeapPad are two attractive choices you may want to check out as these two are very popular among parents and younger kids.
InnoTab and LeapPad are an educational device which acts similar to your tablet but instead of various apps that may not be suitable for their age or have no use in the learning time, they are made specifically for children and can be used right out of the box. To conclude it shortly, it is a very less-capable version of your actual tablet which is optimized for teaching and entertaining the users. Price wise they are not cheap but mostly far cheaper than your daily smartphone.
Besides for parents who are worried about their children spending lots of time in front of their smart device, InnoTab and LeapPad are two great options for older family members looking at a gift to present their younger family members or parents for their kids. These two are ideal for children, starting from older toddler such as 3 years old until preschool or about 6-7 years old and as long as they are interested in the device but we do think older kids will have their own smartphones at this age.
InnoTab and LeapPad Design
When looking for a toy for children, one of our first concerns is their rigidity because we all know how our kids treat their toys which are often not very friendly and due to their clumsiness, many devices can get damaged easily. Thanks to how these two built their products, especially the InnoTab 3 and LeapPad Ultimate; these tablets are very durable. They are made from all-plastic but sustain being dropped several times with no issue. Side by side, it is easy to see LeapPad Ultimate has a bigger screen.
This model has a very decent sized screen which is spread over 7-inch in comparison to InnoTab 3 which is only 4.3-inch and instead of portrait, this tablet is operated in landscape position. We do think the InnoTab 3 will be more ideal if your kids love to use smartphones due to the design. In the box, you will find an additional stylus as well but they can be used like a regular touch screen. Since their display is plastic, we also recommend putting a protector to prevent obvious scratches.
InnoTab and LeapPad Apps
Moving further, let’s check what InnoTab and LeapPad can offer and starting from their apps, there are lots to play with right out of the box. For example the InnoTab 3 has 15 on-board apps to start with and you can expand it with the included read, play & create cartridge while also letting them access more on the V-Tech learning online app when connected to the Wi-Fi. For storage, this tablet carries 2GB of memory but can be added up to 32GB when needed.
On the other hand, the LeapPad Ultimate also offers a lot from 25 apps and access to more than a thousand of learning apps, games, and videos while also providing a slot for cartridges which is sold separately. However, this tablet toy doesn’t have an expansion memory slot so the 8GB of memory should contain all the apps and files we have. Read also: VTech Touch and Learn Vs Explore and Write.
InnoTab and LeapPad Performance
As for their performance, InnoTab and LeapPad are working very well and very simple too. We are impressed by the build quality because these are very robust yet, there are still quite high possibilities to crack their screen if your kid throws it further not by accident but for those with mild kids, you don’t have to worry, moreover with an addition of screen guard. The stylus comes attached in LeapPad but you have to attach it manually for the InnoTab 3.
Their displays are not as bright and responsive in our opinion but this is because we are used to a real tablet. The processor itself is not fast either yet still decent and expect to wait a few seconds when opening games or apps with these tablet toys. We also want to mention that InnoTab 3 uses 4 AA batteries so if you want rechargeable ones, an additional purchase is needed while on the other hand LeapPad Ultimate comes with a charger and its rechargeable battery.
InnoTab and LeapPad Features
The last point we want to talk about is their additional features and as you can expect, these tablet toys have speakers and 3.5mm jack for their headphones as well as a volume button for the adjustment. LeapPad Ultimate has two cameras; at the back and front but InnoTab 3 has one which is reversible to face forward or facing the user. Additionally, there is a navigation button on both toys to navigate the menu or games conveniently depending on which the children like better.
InnoTab vs LeapPad
These tablet toys are very ideal to prevent your kids from spending most of their time using the real smart device which may have content that is not appropriate for their age while also acting as a learning tool and entertaining toys. There are lots of programs inside to let them try one by one but you can add more in InnoTab through its expandable memories especially for other types of files like music or images and photos. InnoTab only has one camera but is adjustable to face either direction.
LeapPad Ultimate on the other hand has a bigger screen for a wide view and bigger built-in memory as well as more apps out of the box. Our favorite is it also has a rechargeable battery and its adapter so we don’t have to make additional purchases.
- Innovative and educational
- Great fun for children, toddlers, and infants
- Designed to be safe and durable
- More compact and lightweight design
- This ultimate kid-tough tablet features a 7" shatter-safe screen, multi-touch capacitive screen and a built-in bumper for durability
- Includes $110 worth of learning games, apps and videos that kids can play right away
- Access to a library of content including award-winning apps and cartridges featuring kids’ favorite characters
- Exclusive Just-for-Me learning technology built into many of the learning games adapts the curriculum to a more or less challenging level to keep kids engaged and motivated
You can pick any of these toys as there is no bad option between the two but personally we like the LeapPad especially thus Ultimate model, mainly for its bigger display, huge built in memory, and rechargeable battery in the box.
